We have a simple rule of thumb, high fats and low carbohydrates is the best way to lose weight. When your body is low on carbohydrates, it reaches a state of ketosis. In simple terms, ketosis is a state in which your body is forced to break down fats into energy, as the body is low on carbohydrates and hence it cannot receive energy from the same. In a ketogenic diet, your body basically switches it source of fuel supply from carbohydrates to fats.
Normally the body uses glucose as its primary source of energy,
which it obtains by breaking down sugars or carbohydrates.On a regular diet, the liver and muscles will store carbohydrates in the simplest form called glycogen, which basically consists of glucose molecules. But sometimes your body uses up the glucose from this storage space, and the excess glycogen has already been sent to the fat cells. The liver is now unable to pump out the glucose that is required to keep the body and brain functioning.
In a situation where the body is low on glucose, it needs to find an alternative fuel. The body then goes into ketosis, which is a state marked by the increase of ketones in the body. Basically, ketosis is a metabolic process in which the body uses stored fats as a source of energy ie fat is broken down into energy. When the liver is low on glucose, it starts producing ketones as a substitute. Ketones are beneficial for the body as they increase energy, enhance muscle performance, and allow weight loss.
