There is No More Food…

RSS
NMF 2 That statement is not as unreal as it seems today. There is an alarm that has been sounded off due to climate change. It has to do with one of our most basic needs- Food. Our food system, agriculture, and supply chain around it, is under a huge threat due to the changing climate. Forces of nature are changing as we see with frequent floods, snow in the desert, famine in the world’s’ wettest spot Cherrapunji. It’s as real as you and I are. If it’s affecting our environment, it’s affecting us. It’s affecting you and me and it’s not going away or resolving itself, however fervently we pray for it too, or hope for it. Food security is one of the biggest issues of climate change. To meet the ever increasing demand of the growing population, agriculture and food systems need to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change and become more resilient, productive and sustainable. This is the only way that we can ensure the well-being of ecosystems and rural populations and reduce emissions. Growing food in a sustainable way means adopting practices that produce more with less in the same area of land and use natural resources wisely. No More Food 1 To create awareness as well as garner compliance worldwide, a day has been dedicated to this cause. World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16th October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945. The theme for the WFD of 2016 is “ Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too”. We need to get involved and be the change that we want to see. Here is how:
  • We need to waste less food, save our forests, protect the earth’s precious natural resources like water and land use energy sources that cause less pollution, among .other things. This requires for us to change the way we use our resources by learning to use less or just about as much as we need, reduce wastage and share resources like cars.
NMF 3
  • Conserve water:
    • Restrict the amount of water used for bathing.
    • Fix a leaky tap or a leaky cistern.
    • Recycle water to water plants.
    • Use to feed the need and not the greed
    • Educate your community
  • Keep water and soil clean: Pick up litter and choose bleach free/chemical free household cleaners, paint By reducing litter and using eco-friendly products water contamination and soil degradation can be limited.
NMF 4
  • Diversify our diet: Eat an all-veggie meal (including pulses like lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas) instead of meat meal. Natural resources are depleted to provide meat.
  • Go Organic: Organic farming helps our soil to stay healthy and retain its ability to store carbon, which helps reduce climate change.
  • Conserve energy by conserving electricity and using solar panels or other green energy systems
NMF 5 Waste less
  • Buy only what you want: Do not give in to impulsive buying which might go waste.
  • Pick the misshapen/ugly fruit and vegetable: Try some ugly fruit and vegetables and make use of food that might otherwise go to waste. Funny fruit or veg are often thrown away because they don’t meet cosmetic standards. But in fact, they taste the same, if not better.
  • Store food wisely to avoid wasting
There are plenty of other ways in how we can help by taking small steps today for a better-fed future. Want to learn more on how to?
