Often referred to as the “Queen of Spices,” its main characteristics are a pepper-like aroma, sharp taste and golden color. It is used extensively in India and Asia to impart yellow color to the curries. The spice is also used as a natural dyeing agent for cloths. It contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin which has many healthy benefits. Here are some of the ways turmeric can benefit your body: 1. Chronic inflammation and pain: Curcumin found in turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agent that helps in reducing chronic inflammation and pain. 2. Skin and aging: Turmeric has healing properties for skin. The antibacterial property helps to reduce blemishes and acne. It also improves texture of the skin. Since it is anti-inflammatory it reduces redness or other skin irritations. Turmeric may help in the treatment of psoriasis. 3. Cancer: Recent studies have shown curcumin’s ability to inhibit cancer cell growth, boost antioxidant level and immune system, and kill cancer cells.   Possible side effects of turmeric Turmeric is generally safe in individuals of all age groups, side effects may occur when taken in excess. 1. Some individuals may develop nausea, vomiting, gastric upset or diarrhoea with high intake. 2. Turmeric containing ointments and lotions may lead to skin allergy, rash and burning sensation in some individuals. 3. The National Institute of Health has found that turmeric may slow blood clotting. That is why you should avoid combining this ingredient with any anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. 4. It is recommended to avoid turmeric if you have problems with your gallbladder. If you have gallstones or a bile duct obstruction, turmeric may cause your condition to worsen. 5.
